Description

Join PEEC and the Los Alamos Mountaineers on this day hike to Spirit Lake via Winsor Trail in the Pecos Wilderness. Mid-October is a great time to hike in the Sangre de Cristo mountains and view aspen groves at the peak of fall color. This will be a moderately difficult day hike, out-and-back to Spirit Lake. The distance is approximately 13 miles round-trip at high elevation. It’s a long day hike, but non-technical, so the group will start hiking early.

Meet at the Santa Fe Ski Area (Winsor Trail trailhead) at 8:00 AM. Bring water, snacks, lunch, sun hat, rain gear, clothing layers (the morning will be chilly), and a water purifier (if you intend to collect water from streams). Stream water is available at 2.25 miles and 3.5 miles from the trailhead, as well as the outflow from Spirit Lake (~6 miles in).

Zack Baker and Jean Dewart are leading this trip for PEEC as part of the collaboration with the Los Alamos Mountaineers. Zack is an experienced local hiker and skier of the area around the Santa Fe Ski Basin and Winsor Trail areas. Jean is an experienced local backpacker, hiker, skier, and kayaker.

Admission: $5/non-member, free/PEEC or LAM member.
