Description

Join PEEC and the Los Alamos Mountaineers for the November Mountaineers meeting and presentation. There will be a mountaineers meeting at the beginning of the event (about 15 minutes), then we'll hear from Rick Rubio about avalanche safety. You can view the presentation in person at the Los Alamos Nature Center or from home via Zoom (slides and audio only). Please register in advance.

In this one-hour talk, you'll learn key aspects of avalanche safety, including how to recognize and avoid avalanche danger. The presentation will cover the main factors that cause avalanches, such as terrain, weather history, precipitation, wind, and solar exposure. You'll also explore the human factors that can lead to accidents and how to plan the safest routes. Finally, the session will provide guidance on what to do if an avalanche occurs, helping you stay prepared and informed in winter conditions.

About the Presenter:

Rick Rubio is a long time mountaineer, climber and skier, and has climbed and skied internationally over the span of several decades.  He is AIARE1 and AIARE2 certified.

Admission: Free (please select an in-person or virtual ticket).
