Description
Los Alamos will be participating in the National Audubon Society's 125th annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) this holiday season, with a bird count in and around Los Alamos County on Sunday, December 15th, 2024.
The CBC is the longest-running community science project in the world, and the results of the CBC have been used by ecologists and ornithologists to track bird populations and distributions, including population responses to things like West Nile Virus, the banning of DDT, and the warming climate. Volunteers will break up into small teams that will spend the day identifying and counting every bird they can find. Each team will be assigned a local birding expert, so volunteers do not need to have any particular skill in identifying birds. There are also opportunities for volunteers who wish to report birds seen at their feeders and count from the comfort of their homes.
Most field teams will be doing some hiking and spending most of the day outdoors. There is no cost for this event and the public is encouraged to take part! Anyone wishing to participate should contact Mouser Williams at mouser@mouser.org prior to the day of the event so that you can be placed on a team appropriate to your skill level and desire for physical exertion.
Admission: Free.
