Description

Cerro GrandeSadly, Jan has let us know that there is not enough snow for this outing to be safe and fun.  We hope to offer it next year.

Join hike leader Jan Studebaker on a fun snowshoe outing for the whole family. The Cerro Grande route winds its way up to the highest point in Bandelier with Cerro Grande Peak at 10,199 ft. The  route is marked by yellow diamonds and is 2.3 miles each way (4.6 round trip) and is expected to take 3-4 hours. This is a moderate hike, with an elevation gain of approximately 1,200 ft. from the trailhead to summit. The route passes through a mixed conifer forest, and the view of the Valles Caldera and lower Bandelier from the top is quite spectacular. Before hiking be sure you are prepared with adequate gear and clothing, such as snowshoes and poles, gaiters, warm clothing including winter hat and gloves, plus water, a simple lunch and snacks for the journey up. Snowshoes can be rented from the County at the Aquatic Center. Children are welcomed if they are up to the hike! No dogs are permitted in the park.

Advance registration is required. Meet at the trailhead at 10 a.m.

NOTE:  The hike leader has the right to refuse participation to anyone he or she feels is not fully prepared for the hike.

Please note that we now limit all hikes and outings to 25 people or fewer. Also, we will ask you for an emergency contact number. If the hike says "full" you may be put on the waiting list. We will let you know if anyone cancels. If you're signed up and can't make it, please let us know so that someone else can take your place.
