Description
Are you ready to welcome spring migration with a rewarding canyon hike? Join Robin Gurule with PEEC and the Los Alamos Mountaineers (LAM) for a morning trek through Acid and Pueblo Canyons as we search for migrating songbirds and learn to identify them by their songs. No prior birding experience is necessary, and beginners are welcome!
We will meet at the Aquatic Center trailhead at 7 AM and return around 10 AM. This is approximately a 4-mile hike along a steep, rocky trail with significant elevation gain, so participants should be prepared for a moderately strenuous outing. Along the way, we will pause frequently to listen for and identify birds, with a special emphasis on recognizing species by ear.
Bring water, sturdy hiking shoes, and layers for variable spring weather. Binoculars are encouraged if you have them; a limited number will be available to borrow. No dogs allowed.
Group size is limited to five participants to allow for a quieter, more intimate birding experience. Reserve your spot today!
Admission: Free for PEEC or LAM Members and $5 for Non-Members
About Robin:
Robin grew up in a small town in Arizona, spending her afternoons hiking in the Sonoran Desert. Summers were filled with backpacking in the Washington Cascades and working in her cousins’ apple orchards. She learned realistic bird carving from a friend and pursued it as a vocation for a decade. After earning her accounting degree and CPA from Northern Arizona University, Robin had a long career at Los Alamos National Laboratory, starting in Accounts Payable and retiring in 2018. Now, she enjoys birding, hiking, backpacking, rafting, organic gardening, and folk music and dance, serving as treasurer for the Folk Music and Dance Society Board since 2018. Robin joined PEEC's Board in November 2024.
